Leading lady of business

November 10th, 2009 - In the emerging Asian economy, more and more women are choosing finance, trade and economic careers. Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansour, wife of the Malaysian Prime Minister Dato" Seri Najeeb Tun Razzaq, said women were further pushing up the levels of their ambitions.

"I have been talking to women in the private sector (and) the public sector. What amazes me is that women nowadays occupy the positions [in] middle-level decision making [management]," Rosmah said.

However, "not so much of the upper posts of the decision making, so maybe that is what we have to fight for now," she added in an exclusive interview with Gulf News during her visit to Dubai to participate in a conference on women and leadership.

Dubai Womens College Students Learn Important Leadership Skills at Women in Leadership Forum

November 5th, 2009 - Under the patronage of HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Women in Leadership Forum laid a platform for students and graduates of Dubai Women’s College (DWC) to enhance their skills and learn more about leadership.

“It is very important to support such events to celebrate the success of women leaders,” said Dr. Monica Gallant, DWC Business Chair. “These women are role models for the youth in this country, all of whom are on the path to become the leaders of tomorrow.”

Kuwaiti woman wins WIL Award

October 29th, 2009 - Heba Al-Kharafi of Kuwait was chosen among 500 female leaders from the Middle East to receive the Achievements Award of the Women in Leadership (WIL) forum that was recently held in Dubai, as appreciation to her efforts regarding women affairs and encouraging arts and culture.

Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia received an award for activating the role of women in leadership, while UAE"s Foreign Trade Minister Sheikha Lubna Al-Qasimi received the businesswoman leadership award.

Al-Kharafi said that the understanding of different cultures, religions and civilizations became a rare thing, reducing tolerance among people.

Last June, she was the first Arab lady to receive the personal royal medal from Prince Charles of Wales.

Economic disenfranchisement of women under the spotlight

October 28th, 2009 - Economic empowerment of women was the subject discussed during the second day of the forum on Women in Leadership held in Dubai.

One of the main issues addressed was the lack of women controlling resources and their disenfranchisement.

Even though women represent half of the world population they only earn one third of the world’s income and own less than 10% of its total resources, the participants were informed. At the same time they represent 2/3 of the world’s illiterate population and 2/3 of the 1.2 billion persons living on less than a dollar a day.

Women of the world unite and get ahead

October 27th, 2009 – Women are, sometimes, their own worst enemy, said Rosmah Mansor.

Speaking at an international forum of women leaders here, the wife of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak added: “We do more damage to each other, especially when we see another woman as a competitor.” Outlining the ingredients in moving forward, she said political will is urgently needed to put in place and implement policies. This includes monitoring mechanisms to enable a bigger role for women in leadership and management.

“Women must develop networks and cooperate, share insights, knowledge, resources and experiences in order to progress.
“Women must seize the opportunities that are open to them,” she said in her keynote address before 300 women leaders from political, academic and business sectors worldwide at the Women In Leadership Forum here Monday.

October 27th, 2009 - Dubai World’s Group Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer Maryam Sharaf has been named “Leading Woman CFO” during the Women in Leadership Forum on Dubai on Sunday. Princess Haya opens WIL forum

October 26th, 2009 - Princess Haya bint Al Hussein, Wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, today opened the first Women in Leadership (WIL) forum, being held under her patronage at Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai.

In a speech delivered on her behalf by Reem Al Hashemi, Princess Haya said the 21st century had brought in sweeping changes for women in all fronts.

Dubai Chamber to support Women In Leadership (WIL) Forum in Dubai

Dubai, 19th October 2009 - The Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry has confirmed its role as a supporting partner in organising and marketing at the Women in Leadership (WIL) Forum to be held from October 25 to 27 in Dubai.

Speaking on its decision to partner with the WIL Forum, Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry Director General, HE Eng Hamad Buamim said: “The Dubai Chamber has been a big advocate of women in leadership.”

“Since its inception some four decades ago, the Chamber has been providing a fitting platform for women’s growth in the work place. Today, women represent 50% of the total workforce of Dubai Chamber as well as 40% of the top management team and 22% of the middle management level,” he said.
